World War I battlefield trench
These preserved trenches from World War I in France were dug in the deep woods, giving soldiers the cover they needed during battle.  Today they are empty but for a couple of inches of snow, and the scene is peaceful and serene.  During World War I, the trenches were used by soldiers who wanted to protect themselves from the enemy.  They hid in these trenches in groups, during the day but also in the dark of night, hoping that bullets and other weapons would miss them.  Today, the sounds surrounding the trenches are those of wildlife, birds, and wind.  During World War I, however, typical sounds included gunshots, mortar rounds, and the sounds of men trying to survive.
